Apple is late at the AI Party

Apple’s introduction of Visual Intelligence in the iPhone 16 series with iOS 18, marks a significant leap in AI-powered visual search, directly competing with Google Lens. While both tools aim to enhance users’ interaction with their environment, key differences exist in how they function and deliver information.

Core Functionalities

Google Lens has been around since 2017 and is widely used to identify objects, landmarks, and texts by leveraging Google’s vast data to return search results. Users can point their camera at an object, and Lens will quickly display relevant information such as item details, shopping links, or translation options. The power of Google Lens lies in its cloud-based processing and integration across both iOS and Android platforms.

Apple’s Visual Intelligence, on the other hand, is a more integrated and private approach. Introduced in 2024, this feature uses the iPhone’s on-device processing, driven by the powerful A17 Bionic chip. Instead of relying heavily on cloud computing like Google Lens, Visual Intelligence processes most of the data locally on the iPhone, they are significantly enhancing user privacy. This allows for more context-aware insights, such as showing restaurant menus and reviews, or even enabling instant reservations without leaving the camera interface.

A standout feature of Visual Intelligence is its privacy-centric design. Apple emphasizes that all processing happens on the device, ensuring that user data remains confidential. This is in contrast to Google Lens, which typically relies on cloud servers to analyze images and gather data. Apple’s approach enhances privacy and provides contextual information directly in the camera app. For instance, pointing the camera at a concert poster might allow users to add the event directly to their calendar, offering seamless interactivity

Third-Party Integration

Both systems integrate with third-party tools, but Apple’s Visual Intelligence offers a more fluid integration with native apps and external databases. For instance, while Google Lens can link users to shopping platforms or translate text, Apple’s tool might pull deeper insights like restaurant reservations or item pricing from various trusted sources, all while ensuring smoother workflow continuity.
